This article builds on questions we have been exploring for years around innovation management, capabilities, dependencies, ecosystems and freedom of action \u2014 and have recently started sharing through Cobelty.<\/h3>\n

Across research, technology, ecosystems and standardization, the same challenge keeps emerging: how can organizations prepare and act when the environment they are preparing for is itself changing?<\/p>\n

The challenge is not change alone. Technologies, markets, regulations, standards, ecosystems and capabilities evolve at different speeds \u2014 while increasingly depending on and influencing one another.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Organizations must make decisions within this complexity, based on assumptions about environments that are still evolving. Approaches such as Lean Startup have taught us to formulate hypotheses, test them, learn and adapt. But not all assumptions have the same consequences. A customer hypothesis may sometimes be tested in weeks. Developing expertise, building an industrial capability or establishing an ecosystem position may take years. <\/p>\n

Learning that an assumption was wrong is one thing.
\nBeing able to act on what we have learned is another.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From readiness to preparedness<\/h3>\n

Organizations continuously prepare for what they believe is coming: developing technologies and skills, building products and partnerships, investing, participating in research, Open Source or standardization.
\nBut while the organization evolves, the environment evolves too.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The destination moves while we are moving towards it.
\nReadiness is a moving target. Preparedness is the managed trajectory towards it. <\/strong><\/p>\n

That trajectory is shaped by a succession of decisions: how to engage, which capabilities to build or access, where to invest, whom to partner with, which options to preserve \u2014 and when to change course.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Choosing how to engage<\/h3>\n

Faced with emerging change, organizations also need to decide how to engage<\/strong>.
\nThey may monitor a development, engage early to learn and prepare, contribute to it, seek to influence its direction \u2014 or take a leading role.
\nTechnology standardization makes this particularly visible: monitor emerging specifications, gain early access, contribute, influence technical choices or lead part of the work. .
\nThe same logic applies to Open Source and other technology ecosystems<\/p>\n

There is no universally right level of engagement. Choosing one is itself a strategic decision. <\/strong><\/p>\n

And that decision is rarely one-dimensional. Moving from monitoring to contributing or leading may require technical capabilities, investment, partnerships, IP choices, legal commitments or changes to a product roadmap.
\nThis is why emerging change needs to be examined from different perspectives \u2014 R&D, Product, Market, IP, Legal, Finance, Business Development and Strategy \u2014 not to produce more analysis, but to make better-informed decisions about what to do next.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Decisions shape trajectories<\/h3>\n

\nNew evidence challenges assumptions. Technologies mature. Standards change direction. Communities evolve. Markets respond.
\nAn organization may engage more, engage differently \u2014 or disengage. That choice may, in turn, require adjustments to its capability, investment, partnership, IP or product trajectories.<\/p>\n

Preparedness is therefore not about predicting the future. It is about repeatedly asking:
\nWhat is changing? What does it mean for us? How should we engage? What does that choice require? What should we decide and do now? <\/strong><\/p>\n

And, as new knowledge emerges:
\nAre these still the right trajectories?<\/strong><\/p>\n

From intelligence to action<\/h3>\n

This is one of the ideas behind DreamLand by Cobelty.<\/strong>
